Ethiopia became landlocked when Eritrea, a significantly smaller country, became independent from it. Ethiopia retained free access to the Red Sea through Port Assab until the 1998–2000 war between the two countries ended that arrangement. Since then, Ethiopia has paid significant port fees to neighbouring Djibouti for use of their ports instead.
